2010 Stand Up San Francisco Results!

On September 17, 2010 San Francisco Bay Area citizens and groups joined the annual global Stand Up and Take Action for the Millennium Development Goals event, along with over 100 million people at over 1,000 cities and locations worldwide. This action was organized by RESULTS, ONE and a network of other local activists that take actions all year long to advance global public health and international development goals.

The 2010 Stand Up action on the steps of San Francisco's City Hall had a special focus on supporting and replenishing the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria (the Global Fund). Bay Area advocates stood with blow-ups of a letter to President Obama circulated by Oakland's Congresswoman Barbara Lee that had 101 other congressional signers, and a San Francisco Chronicle editorial. Both the sign-on letter and the editorial asked the President to commit to a large increase in US support for the Global Fund. The end result of this was that at the Global Fund conference October 4th in New York, President Obama boosted the US pledge to the Global Fund by 38 percent to $4 billion for three years.
